Fundraiser and Screening of La Orquesta
Friday November 13 6-8pm | $10 suggested donation to La Orquesta
A movie about a retired music teacher (Juana Alzaga) that sets out to create a youth orchestra, the first of its kind for immigrant families in Georgia.
Over her 40-year teaching career, Juana Alzaga has maintained a tireless commitment to her students. She’s led many school orchestras, but this one is different. The majority of her students’ families are immigrants from Central and South America who’ve made new homes along Buford Highway, one of the most diverse corridors in the South. For most, this is their only opportunity for music education.
LA ORQUESTA follows Juana, an indomitable teacher and activist, and her orchestra over the course of one school year. Through cinéma vérité, intimate interviews and archival footage, the film tells the story of a community coming together to offer its children opportunities that should be accessible to all, even as they navigate health and financial challenges and increasing hostility toward immigrants.
Made by our wonderful friends Monica Villavicencio and Stephanie Liu

DFOS Site (Dark Forest OS)
I recently stumbled upon a new platform I am really excited about. It’s built around the idea that the open internet is changing and prioritizing more private groups.
In the words of the founder of DFOS “Instead it (the internet) became a place to be watched, measured, advertised to, and made to perform. People began moving somewhere quieter: private group chats, small communities, newsletters, and hidden corners of the web. These became the dark forests of the internet.”
We will be able to chat, hold communal calendars, sell books, host our blog and more.

Latent Figures
Jannis Marsocheck
Jannis Maroscheck returns with an updated look on machine-generated graphics and the core motif of mass produced ideas. Searching for forms of expression hidden between ancient runes and y2k logos, medieval monograms and clip art illustrations, hieroglyphs and stock icons, Maroscheck developed systems to merge the shared visual vocabulary designed by humans across eras, continents and cultures.

No Straight Road Takes You There
Rebecca Solnit
In her latest essay collection, the award-winning author explores climate change, feminism, democracy, hope, and power and its abuses. Throughout, she asks us to heed the stories we tell or have been told, and the ways these stories can or should be changed. Solnit offers a reappraisal of the value of indirect consequences—and an embrace of unpredictability, slowness, and imperfection in the politics of how to change the world.
